Most antique lanterns were originally either gas or oil lit. These lanterns can be illuminated with electric light by simply dangling the light cord and bulb into the centre of the lantern. There is no need to make any electrical connection directly to any of these lanterns. They are all supplied with a ceiling rose and hook combination, which the lantern chains attach to. Your cable then drops through the hole in the centre of the hook, and that has the bulb on the end that then lights the lantern. It requires an electrician to replace a ceiling rose and deal with your cable and bulbholder, just exactly as it does for any replacement electrical lighting.
